Melanie's Freshman Year In English 9A
"Maycomb County had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself"
                        -Jean Louise (6)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
" 'First of all,' he said, 'if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider thinks from his point of view--" "Sir?" "--until you climb in his skin and walk around in it."
                        -Atticus (39)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Summer was on the way; Jem and I awaited it with impatience, Summer was our best season: it was sleeping on the back screened porch in cots, or trying to sleep in the treehouse; summer was everything good to eat; it was a thousand colors in parched landscape; but most of all, summer was Dill."
                        -Jean Louise (45)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
" 'You are too young to understand it, but sometimes the Bible in the hand of one man is worse than a whiskey bottle in the hand of oh - your father.' "
                        -Miss Maudie (60)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness' sake. But don't make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, and evasion simply muddles 'em."
                        -Atticus (116)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."
                        -Miss Maudie (119)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"People in their right minds never take pride in their talents."
                        -Miss Maudie (130)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars, was the bravest man who ever lived."
                        -Jean Louise (134)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
" 'but around here once you have a drop of Negro blood, that makes you all black' "
                        -Jem (216)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
" 'Well I'm gonna be a new kind of clown. I'm gonna stand in the middle of the ring and laugh at the foks.' "
                        -Dill (290)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Mr. Underwood simply figured it was a sin to kill cripples, be they standing, sitting, or escaping. He likened Tom's death to the senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters and children."
                        -Jean Louise (323)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
" 'I never heard tell that it's against the law for a citizen to do his utmost to prevent a crime from being committed, which is exactly what he did, but maybe you'll say it's my duty to tell the town all about it and not hush it up. Know what'd happen then? All the ladies in Maycomb includin' my wife'd be knocking on his door bringing angel food cakes. To my way of thinkin', Mr. Finch, taking the one man who's done you and this town a great service an' draggin' him with his shy ways into the limelight--to me, that's a sion. It's a sin and I'm not about to have it on my head. If it was any other man it'd be different. But not this man, Mr. Finch.' "
                        -Heck Tate (370)

- This quote really stuck out to me because I realized that it's true. Fear is really the only thing any of us have to fear. We spend our whole lives being afraid, but in the end, it's all just a big waste of time. People think the world is such a big scary place, when the only thing we really need to fear, is fear itself. It holds us back.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- This quote is actually quite famous. Maybe not in these exact words, but I can think of numerous times I have heard it. It really is so true. Until you think of how the other person is feeling, you will never understand. You must put yourself in their position and think about how you would react to the situation. Without doing that, it's always just going to be conflict.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- I really appreciated what Scout said. I feel the exact same way about summer. Maybe not in those exact words, or memories, but it really related to me. Just like Scout, I am always looking forward to summer. No matter what season it is; if it's not summer, I can't wait until it is.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Honestly, it took me awhile to understand this one. It really confused me, but after a little bit, I got it. I think it's funny that Miss Maudie said this. I understand completely. My dad is an alcoholic, and that's one of the main reasons he's not in my life today. But some people I know are just too religious. I know it sounds bad, but I mean that in the sense that they don't want to be in my life because I'm not the same way. So either way, I lost people to both of the two things. It really hit home for me.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- I agree with this saying 100%. Children can be very naive sometimes, but other times, they know what's up. Just because they're children doesn't mean they don't know things. If you're just straight up with them, instead of trying to make your way through a lie, you're better off. It goes a lot smoother.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- This quote spoke to me because it basically summed up the meaning of this book. It's asking us why should we waste one of the good things about life? These creatures spend their time making sweet music for us to enjoy. There is NOTHING negative! Why waste their lives for a sport?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- For some reason when I was reading, this just stuck out to me. Most people this day in age would gloat about their talents. They would boast about how good they were at basketball, or how well they can sing. Miss Maudie is old fashioned & saying how being too conceited will get you nowhere. I personally, like the old fashioned way better!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- I can't say I really personally relate to this. However, I can say that I know how that is. My niece and nephews are just like Scout. The only difference is that their father isn't in their lives. Even though he isn't that big a part of their lives, they still look up to him and think he is just the coolest guy in the world. I think that all children are like this. They look passed the bad, and the lies, and find the good in people.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- I became really interested in this quote from Jem as soon as I read it. I think it's because it was absolutely right. Back then, it didn't matter how far down the family tree, if there was black in your family, you might as well be 100% african american. They were THAT racist back then. It's a shame really.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- I really love this quote. It shows how independent Dill is. It shows how much he doesn't care what other people think about him. I honestly wish I could be like him. I like to say that I don't care what people think about me, but in reality, I care very much. It's not so bad that if I get called weird or something that I will react. It's more extreme than that, if you understand. I envy Dill for this because this is an amazing character trait to have.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-This quote goes back to the quote by Miss Maudie, about the mockingbirds. Tom had no reason to die. Why should we wast our time killing or punishing African Americans because of their skin color? They spend their time trying to please us, getting rid of them just makes our circumstances worse. I think it was a very brave thing for Mr. Underwood to post in his newspaper.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- This really sticks out to me because of how Heck handled the situation. He would NOT let Atticus tell anyone that Boo Radley was involved. He did was Atticus said before. "You never really understand a person until you consider thinks from his point of view." That's exactly what Heck Tate did! He thought about how Boo would feel if he was suddenly the center of the town's gossip. Once he did that, he understood why Boo lived the way he did, and he tried to help Boo out to keep it that way.
